Concept and Symbolism
At the heart of this masterpiece lies the traditional Jewish motif of the "Mizrach" (East). Historically, a Mizrach is a designated plaque placed on the eastern wall of a home or synagogue, serving as a visual orientation for prayer. Since ancient times, Jewish prayer has been directed toward Jerusalem, and more specifically, toward the Holy of Holies of the Temple that once stood on Mount Moriah. Thus, the word Mizrach is not merely a geographical direction; it is a spiritual compass and an enduring symbol of longing, remembrance, and connection to the Divine.In this piece, the artwork is structured as a multi-layered spatial portal where this physical orientation toward the East seamlessly transitions into a spiritual journey, guiding the viewer from the earthly architecture of the Eternal City toward its sacred, celestial dimension.
 
The Core Focus: Positioned at the exact geometric center, framed by a dark ornamental border adorned with intricate medieval-style knotwork, is the hand-cut word מזרח. Executed in a negative space technique, the letters are not painted onto the surface; instead, they emerge directly out of the depths, allowing the radiant light of the gold background to shine through them.
Sacred Topography: The highest point of the composition is crowned by the Third Temple basking in sunbeams, towards which three white doves soar—symbolizing peace, purity, and the Divine Presence (the Shekhinah).
